    Outside Briggs Grocery Store rests a yellow chair where owner James Briggs usually sat. Yesterday, the building's entrance was cordoned off with yellow police tape, and the chair was empty. Briggs, 66, was brutally beaten with a baseball bat during a robbery Saturday about 5 p.m., police said.

    By Kathleen Jefferis' account, the stranger was a chatty sort. Five days after Christmas, she showed up unannounced at the modest apartment where Jefferis, her boyfriend and their newborn daughter lived. Forty-five minutes later, she was back, bearing baby gifts and inviting Jefferis to join the neighborhood's informal circle of new mothers. There was no neighborhood circle of new mothers, it turned out.

Justice Nancy Morrison said Kelly Ellard didn't understand her rights when she was arrested. As a result, the judge didn't allow jurors to see a videotaped statement Ellard gave to police when she was questioned a week after Virk was beaten then drowned.
