    Ice Box Murders mark 35th anniversary -- (Excerpts from "The Ice Box Murders" (C)2000 Hugh E. Gardenier, III and Martha Leonard Hughes)
    Father's Day, June 20, 1965, Fred C. Rogers , 81, and his wife, Edwina H. Rogers , 72, were murdered. Three nights later their mutilated, dissected bodies were found in the kitchen refrigerator of their home by two Houston police officers. Gardenier and Hughes in their unpublished manuscript, The Ice Box Murders, cite a string of inconsistencies in the investigation, possible political influence, gambling and criminal ties, and power broker oil wildcatters as all influencing the 1965 homicide investigation which never led to an arrest.

    The Kent County Sheriff's Department has hired a private investigator to delve into the county's most puzzling criminal cases, giving new hope to the victims' families but leading to hard feelings at the Sheriff's Department. Eugene Debbaudt, who retired last year from the FBI office in Grand Rapids, will be paid $54,000 a year as a so-called "cold-case investigator."

    Md. Man Charged With Killing Priest -- (LA Times)
    A Maryland laborer with a history of burglary arrests was charged with beating and stabbing to death a priest who surprised an intruder in the rectory of his church. Police arrested Robert Paul Lucas, 25, on a charge of first-degree murder. Police believe Lucas attacked Monsignor Thomas M. Wells, 56, after Wells caught him June 8 burglarizing the rectory.

    A 17 -year-old boy told police he threw a firework into the duplex where an early morning fire Saturday killed three children and critically injured their mother, officials said. The suspected killer actually showed up at the crime scene, sparking a wild chase. Investigators say that the prime suspect, Jeremy Smith, 26, had even brought friends with him to the scene.

    One of the defendants in the carjacking murders has a history of hitting women and once told a psychiatrist he sees ghosts.     Judge Paul Fitzsche sentenced Raymond Junkins to concurrent terms of 40 years for murder, 25 years for attempted murder, 25 years for robbery, seven years for witness tampering and 364 days for theft. A York County jury last February found Junkins guilty of fatally stabbing Howard Lafoe, 63.

    Sobbing on the stand Friday, James Hall described how he killed his mother and kept her naked body on ice in the bathtub, then in the refrigerator for almost three weeks before disposing of it in a trash barrel.
